I have been fascinated with the failure and renovation of structures, both large and small, for some time. This recent work journals my experience of medical intervention as means to renovate my own body back to a healthy structure.
Clay is used as both an additive and reductive material. By adding material, I can simulate the addition of aberrant cells in an unhealthy body. The reductive process of clay mimics cell removal during surgical intervention, pushing the tenuous material of clay to an extreme just before total collapse. As the diseased body is dosed with chemicals as a Draconian remedy, so too does the work reflect this process.
This current ceramic work represents the impact of medical intervention on the human body and mind. Fragile bodies are represented by fragile ceramic work. Both bodies and materials are manipulated and pummeled, growing bumpy as new growth pushes it's way out. In this way I hope to express the unbreakable link between our (my) biology and the seemingly inanimate quality of the clay.
